Dr Cyclops Records: News and Events

Dr Cyclops Records makes the news.

Full Interview below:

Shane Diablo (aka Meatwhistle), Zero Delorean and Sinister are the founding members of the local horror punk band Diemonsterdie. They also run their own record label, Dr Cyclops Records. Shane let us probe his brain about the workings of the label.

What is horror punk? Remember the feeling you had as a kid on Halloween? Horror punk is that feeling in audio/visual form. The sound is typically loud and fast, dark and catchy, often with a big dose of 1950s rock ‘n’ roll. There’s no hard-and fast-rule though. Horror music branches out more all the time into genres like country, goth, electronic, rap and rockabilly. The bands frequently possess a sense of visual flair centering around the dark and bloody, with leather and greaser sensibilities to complement the ‘50s influences.

Why are you drawn to this type of music? We are humorously morbid. We don’t care for typical love songs, but write a love song where love brings somebody back from the grave and you’ve hooked me. There’s no tragedy in Betty Lou breaking up with you at the prom. There is tragedy if she dies of loneliness waiting for you to pick her up for the prom, not knowing you were killed by a train on the way to get her.

Who are the current members of Diemonsterdie? Zero Delorean, Meatwhistle, Sinister, Laverne Lavey and Vladina, with onstage mayhem provided by The Glyphs.

How and when did Diemonsterdie get started? Diemonsterdie started around 2000 from the urge to form a band you could not ignore when they were right in front of you. Jeans and T-shirts aren’t interesting to watch. Bloody monsters are.

What have been the highlights for Diemonsterdie as a band? There have been many and they seem to keep coming. Of course our annual Halloween shows; The Dr Cyclops Records Birthday Bashes 1, 2 and 3; opening for Gwar, Type O Negative and Celtic Frost; and seeing Zero Delorean singing onstage with the Misfits.

When and how did Dr Cyclops Records get started? April 2, 2002 was the official launch of the label. We created a website called World Horror Network; the idea was to bring horror punk from all over the world together. Soon after we decided to put together a horror punk compilation. We were contacted by Cargo Music about distribution of albums, and the rest is history.

Why did you choose the name “Dr Cyclops”? Dr Cyclops was a classic horror movie mad scientist portrayed by Albert Dekker way back in 1940. It was a technicolor film and Dr Cyclops Records has a classic movie monster feel to it.

What defines the Dr Cyclops sound? Great music, a horrifying look, and an amazing stage show. A nightmare you can groove to.

Who are the active bands on your label right now: where are they from and how are they different from one another? Diemonsterdie (SLC). The Nightshift and The Dead Next Door (from Gothenburg, Sweden). Others (from Binghampton, NY.) Horror [unk is unique in itself, and each band has its own style and sound. Others is more metal; The Dead Next Door is straight punk, The Nightshift is musical mastery and DMD is well...all of the above.

What services do you offer to the bands on your label? Generally when we sign a band, we offer full replication of the album from our in-house replication partners, and distribution of the album through a physical distributor, Cargo Music (they deal with all of our brick-and-mortar stores, as well as some online retailers like Interpunk and Amazon). We also offer digital distribution through all of the major digital outlets like iTunes, Emusic, and Rhapsody and about 100 other digital retailers worldwide. We also provide all promotional material and partial tour support.

What do you look for when deciding to sign a band? A great sound, dark and catchy, is a must. Some visual kapowza never hurt anyone, either. We like motivated bands who want to get on the road once in a while. A great sound, a great visual, willingness to tour and promote to the ends of the earth. And lastly: Will they make a good addition to our big, horrifying family?

Where can Dr Cyclops Records be found? As far as phsyical CDs go, they can be found in a lot of one-stop shops around the country and online at places like Interpunk, Amazon, and World Horror Network. We are still looking for a major chain to carry Dr Cyclops Records -- any takers? Digitally, we have well over 100 retailers: all the majors like iTunes, Rhapsody, Emusic, Amazon, even Wal-Mart...ew.

What sort of response have you had -- have you been able to make an underground endeavor like this profitable? Huge response. We are meeting new family members every day. We are uniting those who thought they "were the only ones" of their kind. The numbers are growing. Horror punk fans are the best, and true diehards!

What roles do you each play to keep Dr Cyclops Records running? It is an even playing field between the three of us. Whether we are shipping packages, signing a new artists, or going for coffee, each of our hands like to wash each other’s, er... oh...

Can you take us through a typical week for Dr Cyclops Records? What are the tasks you have to do regularly to keep things running? A regular week usually begins with contacting our distributors to check that things are going OK and make sure they have all of the albums they need. Then we ship out all incoming orders. We generally ship two times a week. We check for orders and package them. We try to contact the bands as much as possible to make sure they are all well, and help with promotion. The rest of our time is spent online promoting the artists and albums, working with new online stores as well as brick-and-mortar ones, fielding requests and spreading the word about the label.

How does a small label like yours deal with the age of digital downloads? A small label like Dr Cyclops Records has damn near put us on even footing with major labels. All they have is massive amounts of promotional dollars. Dr Cyclops Records are available on all the digital outlets that any major artists would be on, and then some -- some digital retailers only deal with indie and unsigned bands.

What are the greatest challenges and rewards you’ve faced in running a record label? The biggest challenge is trying to help the artists we have on our label reach bigger, better boundaries: bigger audiences, and bigger projects for them. Our first and last priority is to spread the word about the artists we work with. It would be great to see one of our artists "break through" the mainstream and introduce the genre of horror punk to a big market and larger audience.

How do you balance working on your own band with working on the label? They seem to go hand-in-hand. The goal is the same; if Dr Cyclops Records does good then Diemonsterdie does good. Before anything else, we think of Dr Cyclops Records as a family, and friendships are way more important to us than all else.

Where do you hope to go from here? Locally, we would like to see more Utahns check out Dr Cyclops Records and horror punk in general. Utah is already be recognized by the horror punk community as a "hot spot" to play; I would like to see that grow larger. I would like to secure a major chain store to carry Dr Cyclops Records nationwide, making it easier to pinpoint fans nationwide to buy our music. I would like to see all of the artists on Dr Cyclops Records achieve success. I would also like to secure a booking agent team interested in booking tours for Dr Cyclops Records artists. I think this list could go on and on. Oh, and a tour in Japan opening for Alice Cooper wouldn’t be bad either.
