The Strain by Guillermo Del Toro and Chuck Hogan

2010-07-03 - 19:43 | Reviews | No comments

It only took 60 days for the entire world to come to an end as we now know it, And Guillermo Del Toro (director Hellboy Series and Pan’s Labyrinth) and Chuck Hogan, have given us a brand new re-imagining of the vampire mytho’s. And for my money, one that is much more entertaining, scary, and digestable. You wont find any cutesy, sparkely vampires in The Strain. And you can be happy for that…What will the end of the world look like? If it is anything like The Strain (Book 1 in a Trilogy) Your nothing but food, food for the undead, that within 60 days swallow the world whole.  When Abraham Satrakian was a small child growing up in romaina, His granmother told him a story, of a man name Jusef Sardu, this is a name he would keep with him his entire life.   now as an old man, he see’s strange happenings, and knows that the time has come for him to once again meet Jusef Sardu, something is beginning and Abraham know that it cannot be good..Set in The present day The Strain smacks of everything Read more >>

R.I.P. “WILLARD” creator Stephen Gilbert

2010-07-03 - 04:39 | Obituaries | No comments

from Fangoria:

We just learned that Irish novelist Stephen Gilbert died. Critically lauded, Gilbert is fondly remembered in our corner for his squirmy 1968 novel RATMAN’S NOTEBOOKS, which served as the basis for both the 1971 Daniel Mann film WILLARD (the novel is more commonly referred to by this name in the U.S.) and its 2003 Crispin Glover starring remake.

Born in 1912, Gilbert passed through a host of professions and a stint in WWII in addition to his literary notoriety. His more genre-oriented output includes MONKEYFACE, about an ape-boy who makes the transition from the jungle to suburban Belfast; and THE BURNABY EXPERIMENTS, in which a millionaire enlists the help of a young man to participate in his studies with psychic translocation.

Gilbert died June 23 in Northern Ireland.

Danzig – Deth Red Sabaoth review

Danzig – Deth Red Sabaoth 2010 The End Records

Danzig returns with his first album in 6 years (if ya don’t count “The Lost Tracks” box set from 2007). Right from the first track “Hammer of the Gods”, Glenn belts his way through the album with ease. Sounding very comfortable with the material and his band – Tommy Victor (guitar), John Kelly (Drums). Glenn plays bass as well as piano & drums on “Black Candy”. The albums burns like a hot knife through butter and Glenn croons like no other on stand out tracks, “Rebel Spirts”, “Pyre of Souls”, “Seasons of Pain” & “Left Hand Rise Above” to name a few and has returned to the form that made him famous back in ‘88 (my fiance even likes it, so that’s gotta say someting). You just can’t help singin along to “Black Candy is so hard to find!” “Black Candy is so hard to find!!” If ya want to get picky, mixes are a little weird on a couple of songs, plus a few familar riffs (typical Danzig) and some of Tommy’s “close my eyes and pray it sounds good” solos are a bit overbearing sometimes but overall, AWSOME!! Hell, there’s not a dud in the bunch. Not saying the last couple of albums were bad (”I, Luciferi” was killer) but this is one of those albums that sounds like he should have done this a few years ago. To me, it was worth the wait.

By LUKE MEREDITH, Associated Press Writer Luke Meredith, Associated Press Writer – 42 mins ago
DES MOINES, Iowa – Paul Gray, the bassist for Grammy-winning metal band Slipknot, was found dead Monday in an Iowa hotel room, police said.

A hotel employee found Gray, 38, dead in a room at the Town Plaza Hotel in Urbandale, a suburb of Des Moines, police said in a statement. Foul play isn’t suspected, and an autopsy is planned for Tuesday.

Amy Sciarretto, a publicist at the band’s record company, Roadrunner Records, confirmed Gray’s death but declined further comment. Most of the band’s members grew up in the Des Moines area.

Slipknot’s self-titled debut in 1999 sold more than a million copies.

Known for its grotesque masks, trashing sound and aggressive lyrics, the band won a Grammy in 2006 for best metal performance for the song “Before I Forget.” Concert industry trade publication Pollstar ranked Slipknot 18th in its Top 20 Concert Tours list in 2009.

Andy Hall, music director of Des Moines rock station Lazer 103.3, said he’d known Gray for 10 years. He described him as a talented bass player who was also one of the friendliest, most caring people he knew.

“This is a big blow, not only to the community of Des Moines but fans of metal at large, worldwide,” Hall said. “It’s a devastating loss. Paul was a wonderful human being.”

The station was planning to broadcast an hour-long tribute to Gray on Monday night.

J.R: How are people responding to Beyond Villainous?

***Aaron: Beyond villainous album sales are exceeding expectations by leaps and bounds all over the U.S. and all over the U.K. Germany and surrounding European countries. The Reviews are positive and I’ve even been personally told that the Album has been helping some people in Cleveland ohio get laid!!! I know, I know…it sounds nuts.

J.R.: You just finished a tour how did that go? What was your favorite show?

***Aaron: We just finished 30 days in the US Northeast and it was an overall success. Great Crowds, I moved alot of CD’s and Merch, and met alot of awesome people along the way…The best showss of the tour were Aliquippa, PA (South of Pittsburg) probably the most violent show I’ve seen in a while. We were invited by our brothers in Children of October which is an AMAZING band to the FALL OUT SHELTER which I recommend any touring band to visit. we did not know what to expect when we first got there as it was underneath a bowling alley ..but there was MORE excitment than an underground fight circuit!!!! The Fans are Tremendous and have a huge appreciation for their venue. We also had a blast at the Downtown Quarterback in Endicott, New York. A 2 story venue that had a great metal and punk crowd. We had a great time rockin with Marquis and Others…and of course you to Jimmy Rotting!!! HAHA. Lastly we closed out our tour on Easter Sunday in Buffalo New York at the Mohawk Place…supporting CALABRESE, all I can say that the crowd was enormous and like it or not we owned the night… yep it was complete ownage…

Type O Negative’s Peter Steele Dead at 48

2010-04-16 - 01:52 | Obituaries | No comments

from Noisecreep:

Word spread just before midnight last night, and now, it has been confirmed. Peter Steele, the bassist and frontman for Brooklyn heavy metallers Type O Negative who also spent time in Carnivore and Fallout, passed away Wednesday at the age of 48. An official cause of death has not yet been released.

Type O Negative manager Mike Renault confirmed the initial reports, saying in a statement, “Peter passed away last night. As of now it appears to have been heart failure. That’s all the details we have right now.”

“Hatebreed would like to extend our condolences to the family, friends and fans of Peter Steele,” Hatebreed says in a statement. “He is one of the best guys we’ve ever toured with and a true legend! There will never be anyone else like him. May he rest in peace.”

Biohazard’s Evan Seinfeld writes on his site that Steele was “my single biggest musical influence … who named Biohazard … I f—ing miss you so much already … I love you brother, I hope you are in a better place.”

Dan Lorenzo of Hades explained that “all of us band guys think we write great songs, but when I listen to Type O, I know that they, and Pete in particular, wrote a bunch of songs that were on another level from the rest of us mortals musically. I don’t use the words ‘musical genius’ together often, but in Pete’s case it fits. And it’s true. Today is a very sad day for me.”

Icarus Witch bassist Jason Myers calls Steele “a true icon, enigma, musical genius and hell of a nice man who I had the pleasure of talking with on several occasions dating back to the early ’90s. His work with Type O Negative was groundbreaking and a large influence on myself and other members of Icarus Witch.”
