For the past five years, the VooDoo Organist has been spreading his gospel of salvation through sin all over the country. He is constantly on tour, and has played well over 600 shows, there is no doubt he will shortly be in a town near you.. and the VooDoo Organist is one show you should not miss. Truly there is no experience you will ever have involoving booze and a creepy fuckin organ, like this. WHN had a chance to chat with the VooDoo Organist……beware.

The Super Psychedelic, and creepy VOODOO ORGANIST! Have any alias name’s over the years?

yes

What drew you to the Organ and for that matter the Theremin?

My parents bought an organ when i was 10. I was an altar boy at the time, and started taking lessons from the church organist. In my teens i started getting into synths, which led to my discovery of the theremin. I’ve always loved the sound and feel of the organ, and enjoy lots of organ music.

Do you remember the first song you wrote as the VooDoo Organist?

I think the first VO song i wrote was “She’s Got Soul.”

When did you decide writing music and touring was the life for you, and When did you get started?

When i turned 30 eight years ago, i had a bad health scare and was hospitalized for a week. At the time i was working for a print shop and hated my life and job. As i was recovering in the hospital i realized i had almost died, and almost died hating my life. When i got out of the hospital i wrote and recorded my first cd, booked my first tour and quit my job. I haven’t looked back ever since.

Gives us the secret to those evil super creepy chords you play, that make everything you do sick and wrong?

Practice.

When recording what I beleive is the first VooDoo Organist Album “The Serpent Dance” give us a tale of the studio?

SD is the first cd to have live drums. I have 3 before that with me and a drum machine.
SD was recorded in Detroit (my home town) with some of my best friends on drums and sax, and a good friend engineering it. Most of it was recorded at the Tempermill.

You are a true road warrior, how many tour dates have you done this far?

666 (give or take, but probably pretty close)

How do you stay on the road as long as you do, and keep all the money issues, and up keep at home?

Its not easy—thats for sure! Since we’re just a two piece, our road expenses are fairly low. I’ve been lucky enough to never loose money on the road. When i’m in between tours i try to find whatever shit job i can find to help make ends meet.

What does the VooDoo Organist do, when you are not on the road?

I’m starting a non profit out in Joshua Tree called Keep Our Desert Clean. I’m also starting an internet radio station called the Voodoo Organ Synth Show. I also try to catch up on sleep when i’m home.

Gives us the biggest or scariest nightmare gig of your life?

Driving from Boise to Bozeman in the middle of a snow storm. I feared for my life that day. I thought i was going to slide off the mountain.

Any memorable bands you have played with while on the road?

We just played with an amazing band from Tacoma called the Swampy Draws. I thought they were fucking great.

You now have a drummer, that travels with you..name? and relationship to you? how did you meet?

Robin Kennon is my drummer. We met the first time i played in his home town, Dallas. He was in a great band called the Necro Tonz. We played area shows together, and actually toured a little together. About the same time they broke up was when i was looking for a drummer. He was my first choice and he agreed to join.

What does the VooDoo Organist listen to, for inspiration?

I like so much music i don’t know where to start. One of my current faves is Sparks. Some of my all time faves are Captain Beefheart, Alien Sex Fiend, the Stranglers, Tom Waits, Screamin Jay.

Name a band you never want to hear again!?

The Eagles

Which movie scared you as a child, and why?

The scene in the Omen where the kid fell thru the ice. That freaked me out.

What has the VooDoo Organist not yet done that you would like to see happen, in the near future?

Play over seas.

Word association, I will say a name, you tell me the first thing that comes to mind:

>>>

Steven Speilberg?

sucks

Heath Ledger?

batman

Liberace?

Barack Obama?
